About the Department

The Department, set amidst the serene ambience of the Salt Lake Campus of Jadavpur University, was established in the year 1989 with the mission of imparting a 360 degree knowledge on generation, transmission and distribution of conventional and non-conventional power. A team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members from diverse background provide the backbone of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Besides, a few experienced guest faculty from industry offer courses on highly applied topics. The various laboratories of the department are equipped with state of the art equipment, providing one of the best R&D infrastructures in the Country in the field of power engineering. Today, the Department offers both Bachelor of Power Engineering and Master of Power Engineering courses. The undergraduate course is blended perfectly with relevant mechanical and electrical engineering subjects along with specialized courses on thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable/non-conventional power generation. The postgraduate course is designed to offer specialized and advanced topics on power generation, transmission and distribution, besides several interdisciplinary papers related to power engineering. The department also has a thriving research group and fosters doctoral programs. The research thrust of the department encompasses a wide domain covering various interdisciplinary areas. The department is a DST-FIST and a UGC Special Assistance Program (SAP) awardee. It also runs several sponsored research projects from funding agencies like DAE, DRDO, DST, AICTE. As a recent development, a micro-grid comprising wind turbine, solar PV and battery has been installed to provide a cross-functional platform to take a giant leap in the field of renewable energy, smart grid and energy security.

About the Seminar

In recent years, the electricity industry has witnessed  a paradigm shift in the way the energy is being produced. The shift from conventional fossil fuel based energy systems to non-conventional, environment-friendly, renewable energy systems is adopted to circumvent the challenges posed by the rapid depletion of fossil fuel reserve, increased energy demand and growing concern in environmental pollution. Envisioning this paradigm shift, a hybrid energy system comprising of wind (3.2 kW), solar (3.0 kW) and battery bank, as storage system, has been installed and commissioned successfully on the rooftop of Power Engineering Department, Jadavpur University, Salt Lake Campus under the aegis of Departmental Research Scheme (DRS) of UGC, Govt. of India. The Department is going to organize one day knowledge-dissemination workshop on Feb. 23, 2017 to share its research experience in the relevant area. The workshop will focus on design and development of a hybrid energy system and the various issues related to power generation from PV and wind energy systems. The interactive program will provide an excellent platform for the industry people, researchers and students to exchange their views and suggest a future road-map for the next generation energy systems.
